Novel recreates the clandestine love between Albert Camus and Maria Casares

Madrid. The love story between Albert Camus and Maria Casares, which was marked by secrecy, distance and the exchange of 865 letters, is the protagonist in the new novel by Susana Fortes, just one more day (Sword).

With Paris occupied by the Nazis as a backdrop, Fortes recreates the story that brought the writer and the young republican actress together despite the age difference – almost a decade separated them – in a contemporary context, through the investigation of a writer who delves into the couple’s correspondence, provided by her editor.

Furthermore, this historical novel – which arrives in Spanish bookstores on January 16 – analyzes the period of profound changes What was the post-war period in Europe, as Fortes delves into the liberation of France, the decolonization of Algeria and the rise of ideological conflicts of the 20th century, without leaving aside the romantic character that permeates his new book since all these events highlighted the tensions of the protagonists, as detailed by the editorial.

That of Casares and Camus was a love story impossible which lasted 15 years, against the backdrop of the Second World War – they became lovers the same day that 15,000 American paratroopers descended on Normandy – without forgetting that the French author was married when they met and that both were tied to the demands of their respective professions.

However, as Espasa emphasizes, As it could not be otherwise, Fortes manages to convey the intensity of a love marked by impossibility and which ended when Camus died in a car accident in 1960.

The Galician writer and columnist, who currently collaborates in creative writing workshops at several universities, is the author of other works such as Dear Corto Maltese, Ashes of the Bounty, Borders of Sand y The Albanian lover.
