From Savona to Reggio Calabria: here’s who is applying to become Capital of Culture

From Savona to Reggio Calabria: the Ministry of Culture has announced the names of the 10 projects selected for the choice of the city as Italian Capital of Culture 2027 which must be proclaimed by 28 March this year. The selection jury chaired by Davide Maria Desario, after having examined the 17 applications received, favored those whose dossiers most responded to the announcement.

The following Municipalities will participate in the final phase of the selection with their related dossiers:
1. Alberobello (province of Bari, Puglia) “Pietramadre”
2. Aliano (province of Matera, Basilicata) “Land of elsewhere”
3. Brindisi (Puglia) “Navigating the future”
4. Gallipoli (province of Lecce, Puglia) “The beauty between land and sea”
5. La Spezia (Liguria) “A culture like the sea”
6. Pompeii (province of Naples, Campania) “Pompei Continuum”
7. Pordenone (Friuli Venezia Giulia) “Pordenone 2027. Surprising city”
8. Reggio Calabria (Calabria) “Heart of the Mediterranean”
9. Sant’Andrea di Conza (province of Avellino, Campania) “Meeting time”
10. Savona (Liguria) “New routes for culture”

The finalists will be called for public hearings on 25 and 26 February 2025. It will be the opportunity for each candidate to illustrate their project in detail to the experts who will evaluate them. For each dossier the hearings will last a maximum of 60 minutes, of which 30 for the presentation of the project and 30 for a question session asked by the Jury. The proclamation of the Italian Capital of Culture will take place by 28 March 2025. The winning city will be awarded a financial contribution of one million euros to implement the initiatives and objectives outlined in the candidacy project.
