British actress Joan Plowright, winner of two Golden Globes, dies at 95

The British actress, winner of two Golden Globes and nominated for an Oscar, Joan Plowright, He died this past Thursday at the age of 95, as reported by his family, this Friday.

“It is with great sadness that the family of Joan Plowright, Lady Olivierinforms you that she passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025 surrounded by her family at Denville Hall at the age of 95,” the statement reads.

The actress, who was married to the actor Laurence Olivierwas known for her award-winning performances Golden Globe for the biographical television film ‘Stalin’ y ‘An enchanted April’for which she was also nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actress.

Plowright also starred ‘Love You To Death’ with River Phoenix, and was a star of the West End and Broadway before his international film success.

His family has highlighted that Plowright ““She enjoyed a long and illustrious career in theater, film and television for seven decades until blindness forced her to retire.” and that he “very much appreciated his last 10 years in Sussex, with constant visits from friends and family, full of laughter and good memories.”

“We are so proud of everything Joan did and who she was as a loving and deeply welcoming human being. He survived his many challenges with determination to make the best of them, and he certainly did.“, they add.

Born in Scunthorpe, Plowright was educated at the local secondary school before winning a scholarship to the Old Vic Theater School at age 17. His first appearance on stage was in ‘If Four Walls Told’ at the Croydon Repertory Theater in 1948 and he later joined the English Theater Company at the Royal Court.

He met Laurence Olivier in 1957 while he was still married to ‘Gone with the Wind’ star Vivien Leigh, and they fell in love while co-starring in the stage version of John Osborne’s ‘The Entertainer.’

In 1961 she won a Tony Award for the role of Jo in Shelagh Delaney’s ‘A Taste of Honey’ on Broadway, where she starred opposite the late Angela Lansbury as her mother.

That same year she married Laurence Olivier and their marriage lasted until the theater actor’s death in 2007 at age 86. She became his carer through a series of chronic illnesses, including cancer, until he died in 1989. In 2004, Plowright was awarded a dame in the New Year Honours.
