Hamburg’s Senator for Culture Carsten Brosda in an interview: How art helps democracy

Art is relevant to democracy because it works against popularization, says Carsten Brosda. The SPD’s Hamburg Senator for Culture is therefore calling for subsidized culture in Germany to be protected.

Hamburg’s Senator for Culture Carsten Brosda (SPD) is one of the country’s most prominent cultural politicians and is considered a candidate for the office of Minister of State for Culture after the federal election in February. As president of the German Stage Association, he is also the first lobbyist for theaters and opera houses. In view of the cuts in subsidies and threats from the right, he calls for culture to be protected – and at the same time for culture to open up to more milieus.
