Architect and academician Vilhelm Helander is dead

Helander was Finland’s most famous protector of building heritage.

Academicianemeritus professor and architect Vilhelm Helander (b.1941) is dead.

Helander, who died at the age of 83, was Finland’s most famous protector and expert in building heritage. He was the first Finn in Finland in 1998.

The most famous works of Helander are the restoration of the old Student House in Helsinki, the renovation plan for Suomenlinna’s landscape barrels, the restoration of the Pori City Hall and the Porvoo Town Hall restoration. Helander is also known for its renovation of the Helsinki Estates House, for which he received the Europa Nostra award in 1992.

In November 2024 Helander received the art of an art academic title President Alexander from Stubb In November 2024. In an interview with HS Helander said he was concerned about the development of Helsinki in recent years. He said he was afraid that the teachings of the 1960s on excessive demolition have been forgotten in modern construction.

Helander was also awarded the State Prize for Information Publication in 1971 and the Pro Finlandia Medal in 1998.
