Berliner Volksbühne strokes two productions for 2025

In response to the austerity measures in Berlin’s cultural budget, the Volksbühne at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz deleted two productions for this year. “We will have to do without production in the 1st half of the year in 2025 and to another in the 1st half of the season 25/26,” said the Berlin Theater.

These are pieces that were planned for the big house in the calendar year 2025. The Volksbühne must save two million euros this year, according to the Berlin Senate’s reduction requirements.

In December, the house had announced that the budget shortening decided would mean calculating the artistic budget, for example for director teams, guest actors, performance costs and special events as well as associated additional costs.

Berlin culture has to save 130 million euros

In response to a written left request for the cuts at the Volksbühne, the cultural administration recently referred to reserves of the house. “The reduction of the consumer grant in 2025 to the Volksbühne appears to be realized against this background.” The theater in turn announced that part of these reserves were earmarked and were generally not available for cuts.

Overall, the Berlin culture has to save around 130 million euros in the 2025 budget, almost twelve percent of its actually planned budget. Numerous other areas in the city are also affected by savings of three billion euros.
