Matthias Lilienthal becomes the new director of the Berlin Volksbühne

Matthias Lilienthal, who was born in Berlin in 1959, was chief dramaturge and deputy director of the house on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz after the turn in the early 1990s, then under Frank Castorf.

In 1998 Lilienthal left the Volksbühne, became artistic director of the “Theater der Welt” festival and then moved to the Theater Hebbel am Ufer in 2003, where he remained as an artistic director and managing director until 2012. From 2015 to 2020, Lilienthal was the director of the Munich chamber games and then worked as a free dramaturge and curator.

Florentina Holzinger, which has already staged on the Volksbühne several times, is said to form a so -called Artistic Board with Freitas. The multi -award -winning Austrian is known for her spectacular stage plays – most recently for the bloody and provocative opera performance “Sancta”.

Most recently, there had been some turbulence at the Volksbühne after the death of René Pollesch, because the Norwegian-German directorial-German director’s Vegard Vinge/Ida Müller, which was actually intended for Pollesch, had also canceled again because of the uncertain financial situation of the house after the Berlin savings decisions.
