Comedians, writers, musicians, filmmakers … The actors of all cultural fields require guarantees and rules before accelerating in the development of artificial intelligence.
It is a subject that divides. While Hollywood actors are worried about their future, musicians make up with artificial intelligence and writers fear seeing their looted works. While Paris welcomes a world summit on AI on Monday and Tuesday, the creators are in demand for safeguards that remain largely to design.
France, copyright country invented by Beaumarchais, planned a “cultural weekend” before the summit, Saturday and Sunday. It will be a « Trade platform where researchers, creators and general public will be able to reflect together on the place of AI in disciplines such as writing, visual arts, music and images »according to the government. Without decision -makers, however.
“More than words, acts”
Because culture should not be on the agenda for discussions between heads of state and governments. « More than words, acts »however, 38 « international organizations representing all creative and cultural sectors » In a press release published on Friday. « There will be no ethical AI without the authorizations of rights holders »claim these federations of musicians, filmmakers, visual artists, translators, authors, journalists, etc.
Strikes to claim safeguards in terms of AI disturbed Hollywood, then the video game sector in the United States since 2023, on the initiative of the Syndicate of American actors (SAG-AFTRA). The most reassembled are often the dubbing actors who consider their copyright trampled every day, when they hear their voices taken over, without their agreement or remuneration, in more and more similar imitations as technologies progress. « We have still not been received by the ministry. We are 5 000 actors who try, through a bias or another, an acquaintance … and nothing works. I think it doesn’t interest them »explained one of the stars of the profession, Brigitte Lecordier, the French voice of San Goku in Dragon Ballto the press at the end of January.
A tool for writers?
Less united, writers also know the fruit of their work exploited without consideration, in a more difficult way to detect. And unlike doublers, who find no interest in it, some of them ask questions to Chatgpt, Gemini, Deepseek or the cat. « It makes me advance faster in my documentation work »says one of them, under the cover of anonymity.
As for seeing their books used to give answers to other authors, almost all of them are hostile. With an acclaimed solution: the right of opposition (“opt-out”). In France, the Society of Gens of Letters, representative organization of authors, asked the “AI actors” on Thursday to respect « the list of works that they are not allowed to use »those of their members. It is still necessary that these companies consult it.
Another company of authors, the SACD, which notably covers theater and cinema, threw a cold by signing with Genario, a French start-up which offers help in writing scenarios by artificial intelligence. Their agreement requires remuneration for the authors for the use of their creations but the writers denounced a « pillage ».
In music, the temptation is also strong in the face of the infinite possibilities opened by AI, from a false album of Oasis to a piece of the Beatles reworked thanks to this technology more than forty years after the death of John Lennon. The title entitled Now and Then was rewarded at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. Another example with the French composer Delaurentis, which has always exploited the potential of computer science and which will be on stage at the end of the “cultural weekend”.
« When you’re all alone in your studio, you’re a girl and you want to have men’s sounds, it’s still great to have a tool that makes you »she said to AFP. But, when you point to the ethical debate, it answers: « I find it a shame in fact, the people who talk about it »these are « not artists ».
