Robert Pattinson provides hustle and bustle at the Berlinale

It is not a competition, but the mass of people who gathered at Potsdamer Platz to catch a glimpse of Robert Pattinson is by far the largest of this Berlinale. It becomes correspondingly loud when he finally appears, willingly lets take photos and give autographs.

The 38-year-old, in T-shirt, jeans shirt and red sunglasses, which he puts on for a few photos, then takes a little ashamed, endures the hustle and bustle with a smile. In any case, the entire team of “Mickey 17”, which came to Berlin for the world premiere of “Parasite” director Bong Joon Ho’s new film, is in a good mood. Before the stars, including Toni Collette and Naomie Ackie, and the director appear at the press conference on Saturday, you can laugh in the hall.

In the sci-fi comedy “Mickey 17” Robert Pattinson plays the title-giving protagonist, who is on a space mission of the “Expendable”, the “unnecessary”. Again and again he dies as a guinea pig on dangerous missions to be “printed out” as a clone and awakening again – until one day something goes wrong, and there are several versions of him at the same time.

His most comedic role

Playing scenes with themselves was “fascinating”, says Pattinson. He was afraid of not being able to develop a real rhythm, but then had fun. Bong Joon Ho cutting edge on the set, so that they could construct the scenes together. What would he tell his clone? “I’m talking to myself most of the time anyway,” he replies, adding slightly tortured: “Maybe what the back of my head looks like?”

The role of the Mickey is the comedic in the career of the British, which is more characterized by heavy food. An inspiration came from the anime, the sudden, extreme mood swings by the characters.

But of course it is not the first time that he plays someone who is immortal. When Cedric Diggory in “Harry Potter” made his breakthrough at the age of 19, but it was the role three years later that was supposed to determine his career for a long time. As a vampire Edward in the “Twilight” saga, he became one of the most famous people in the world. There was hardly a teen or pre-teen in the nineties that would not have been “Team Edward”. Since then, Pattinson has told interviews how traumatic the sudden fame was for him.

The last real film star?

After “Twilight” there was an 180-degree turn: Pattinson mainly devoted himself to roles in hip indie films, moved away as far as possible from the image of the teen swarm. In particular, his Tour de Force in the hectic strip of “Good Time” of the Safdie brothers sealed his status as a serious actor-who has now also affected huge projects such as Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” or Matt Reeves “Batman” films.

He pulled his teachings from the “Twilight” time. He hardly gives interviews anymore, has no social media, rarely can be seen on paparazzi photos. “Is Robert Pattinson the last real film star?”, The “New York Times” described a portrait of the actor in December.

“Robert is very printable,” says Bong Joon Ho jokingly about his star. “I’ll take it as a compliment,” he replies. It feels “incredible” to work with Bong Joon HO, says Pattinson. “This is the directors’ Mount Rushmore”. He said “yes” to the project directly before he even knew what it was about.

“I like to play characters who have to cope with a very complicated, challenging situation, but are not actually the kind of people who would normally think about philosophical questions,” he says. His Mickey is not the brightest lamp and suddenly has to deal with questions like “Why do I exist?”.
