“Until death separates us”: Dua Lipa reacts to the death of the Duolingo application mascot

Duo continued you if you did not “do your lesson”. The emblematic green owl of the Duolingo language learning application has died, the brand announced in publications on its social networks this Tuesday, February 11. This humorous message marks, for the moment, the end of a well identified mascot of Internet users, and which has made react to the stars, a beautiful communication realization.

“It is the heavy heart that we announce that Duo is dead. The authorities are currently investigating the cause of his death and we fully collaborate. To be honest, he probably died while waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we really know? “, Writes the application, before concluding:” We ask you to respect the intimacy of Dua Lipa during this difficult moment. »»

But why Dua Lipa?

The brand with the green owl had been capitalizing for years on the proximity between the names “duo” and “dua”. The owl often referred to the songs of the British star, and felt for her “a feeling unrelated”, could be read on the application site this summer. So inevitably, the first concerned reacted this Wednesday on X at the announcement of the death of his first fan. “Til Death Duo leaves”, pun with “Until Death Do Us Part”, “until death separates us” in English.

“Over the years, we have built a brand image around Duo’s love for her (going so far as to ask her for marriage outside her concert at Madison Square Garden), and we are just as shocked (and honored) as anyone that she recognized her tragic fate, “said a Duolingo representative in a press release, quoted by CNN.

A marketing blow

Founded in 2011, this company based in Pittsburgh (United States) offers a hundred courses in more than 40 languages by means of short lessons to be carried out on its smartphone. The application became extremely popular during the Pandemic of Covid-19 and successive confinements around the world: thousands of people, with more free time at home, had then decided to learn new languages and then discovered Duo, a neon green chouette with orange legs.

Symbol of the application since its launch, “Duo” was often staged in humorous photos or videos that made fun of its insistent character via the application. When a user did not do his daily lesson, the little green owl was put forward in the recall notifications, sometimes very recurrent. The brand had ended up playing criticism or jokes on this insistence by staging its mascot chasing users or in full depression because of those who did not work.

Over the years, other flagship characters of the application appeared on social networks. In reaction marketing at the announcement of the death of his cult owl, Duolingo has marketed new stuffed animals in his image, this time with eyes covered with black cross, sold in colored boxes in the shape of a coffin.
