Predatory art: When works with “red” must be marked

According to the SZ’s predatory art, the Bavarian State Painting Collections claim that they have made no mistakes in the origin of paintings and sculptures. An analysis of their handling of provenance stories shows a different picture.

The State Painting Collections have on Friday with a press release on the predatory art research of the Süddeutsche Zeitung Reacts. In it they write that “all” works with suspected predatory art have been recorded in the online collection of museums since 2022. The list available to the SZ therefore does not contain any new information. In fact, with a few exceptions, however, the history of provenance is missing in the online collection. If there is information, they are usually extremely shortened. Details lack the works of Picasso, Klee and Beckmann mentioned in the article.
