They recognize the legacy of Pablo González Casanova

Pablo González Casanova is a fascinating figure for his academic and intellectual career and his political militancy, said Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas, rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), during the presentation of the volume Pablo González Casanova in his centenary.

In the 46th edition of the International Book Fair of the Mining Palace, Lomelí stressed that the work of the lawyer, sociologist and historian, who died in April 2023, It transcended the borders of our country, had an impact on Latin America and was recognized worldwide.

He added that the renowned thinker was A great university student, a great rector, a universal Mexicanwho was characterized by his congruence and commitment to the best causes of our country.

Lomelí stressed that, as rector of the highest house of studies, González Casanova promoted the creation of the College of Sciences and Humanities, the Open University System and the multidisciplinary schools that later became the faculties of Higher Studies Acatlán, Aragon, Iztacala, Zaragoza and Cuautitlán.

In addition, the thinker made the great intellectual contribution that meant, among others, the book Democracy in Mexicoat a stage where the country grew as a result of the call Mexican miracle and governed a political hegemonic party system.

Before the member of the Governing Board of the UNAM Jorge Cadena Roa, the rector emphasized one of the important thesis that Pablo González developed: the legitimation of political power in the country was given from economic performance.

He commented that in his last years of life González Casanova held a critical look on the way globalization had been taken, which made it sympathize and support the neo -Zapatist movement.

Lomelí said that the work brings together writings from people who worked with Don Pablo and had a lot to tell.

For his part, Miguel Armando López Leyva, Humanities Coordinator of the UNAM, explained that the work is the product of the commemoration in 2022 of the Centenary of González Casanova, for which four round tables were held that explored aspects of their academic life and their relations with different institutions.

The text has a section called Itineraries and trajectoriesin which the personal and political aspects of the also former director of the Institute of Social Research of the UNAM are presented, as well as articles that raise their career in Latin America and social scientist, according to a statement.

The second part, Transcendence of his work and academic activityit contains reflections of some of its contributions to history, interdiscipline and its research projects, among others.

Two speeches are also included with essential ideas for the development of UNAM and the country: that of its inauguration as rector, around university autonomy, and the one that pronounced upon receiving the National Prize for History, Social Sciences and Philosophy, in which it analyzed what democracy implied in the 80s.
