A Roman Theater reported to the ancient splendor which will soon be inaugurated, acropolis with walls of the Sillana era, the testament of a Roman magistrate of the first century AD sculpted in the lively limestone rock: they are some of the 21 sites with which Ferentinoa town of 20 thousand inhabitants in the province of Frosinone, aims to apply for Italian capital of culture of 2028 together with three other centers of Monti Ernici, Alatri, Anagni e Veil.

The pact was signed on February 23 and the petition in support of this perspective has already received hundreds of adhesions: “It would be an important stage of the journey that Italy has started promoting the landscape and cultural heritage of peripheral villages that could enter the promotional and tourist circuit”, underlines the president of the Local Archeoclub Archaeoclub coordinator of Italy Lazio, Antonio Ribezzo.

Objective of the candidacy

The goal is to “reverse the desertification process of small villages”, observes Ribezzo who defines Ferentino “laboratory of the Renaissance”: “We think it can be an innovative candidacy that would go to enhance the small villages of the Apennines, an immense cultural heritage behind Rome”. In Ferentino in 2021 a Press Tour was organized with about thirty international newspapers. The village already has an international look thanks to the twinning with Ekaterinburg in Russia, Rockford in the United States, Raszyn in Poland and Jacobeni in Romania. In Italy it is part of the Mountain Community of the Ernici Mountains and is twinned with San Severino Marche.

Roman theater of Ferentino

Il Roman Theater of Ferentino dates back to the imperial era of the traian or Adriana age: the limestone structures are partly in the open and partly incorporated in private homes that occupy part of the steps. The structure follows the natural decline of the hill, reaching 12 meters high and a diameter of 54 meters. The cavea and part of the scene were brought to light, breaking down some buildings that partly covered the theater. This is the only theatrical building in the Ernici area and proves the importance of the city at the time of the emperors as a holiday center and residence positioned, not surprisingly, near the Terme di Flavia Domitilla.

Acropolis and Testament of Aulo Quintilio Prisco

Another jewel is theAcropolis With walls of squared travertine blocks of the Sillana era. In Ferentino, north-west of Frosinone, there is a very rare and precious epigraphic document that has handed down the memory of a patron of the Roman age over the centuries: it is the so-called Testament of Aulo Quintilio Priscomagistrate of the city, lived in the middle of the 1st century. DC, a rectangular newsstand carved in the rock.

Domus and Roman Market

There is also the Domus of the Republican age found between the ground floor and the foundations of the medieval Town hall With white-black mosaic floors, remains of duties of domestic environments and the impluvium of an atrium. And then the remains of the Roman market with classrooms flanked by shops. A soon in Ferentino will also be inaugurated a Archaeological museum.
