“It will help us a lot”: Nicolas Demorand reveals being bipolar, the end of a taboo for the sick?

The secret had been well kept. However, it has been “a few days” that Marie-Jeanne Richard, president of the National Union of Families and Friends of sick people and/or mental disabled (UNAFAM), had heard from the release of Nicolas Demorand’s book on his bipolarity. In this very strong work, on sale this Thursday under the title “Interior night” (editions Les Arènes), the French Star of France Inter recognizes that he is “a mental patient” and calls to lift “taboos” on this pathology. “It will help us a lot!” Refers the manager.

Like Nicolas Demorand, around 2 to 3 % of the population would suffer from bipolarity in France, says Prof. Bruno Etain, coordinator of the bipolar disorder centers of the fundamental foundation. This psychic disease, of two main types (1 and 2), results in disproportionate mood variations. A affected person will alternate very depressive phases and other ultra-euphoric, hence this “bipolar” word.
