Marie von der Heydt’s vision for Berlin 2030: “My advice to young artists: form gangs!”

Berlin has always been a unique place in pop culture where new, wild, own, own. By David Bowie and the Hansa Studios to the house -occupied scene, Ton Steine Scherben, Nina Hagen and the collapsing new buildings, Hildegard Knef or Rosenstolz, Suror, Techno and Loveparade to Aggro Berlin and Royal Bunker. Whether East or West: Berlin has constantly rethought pop culture – driven by artists and worn by small venues, studios, labels and creative communities.

Today the Berlin pop culture scene is known internationally – and it is under great pressure. Growing budget cuts and an increasingly tense financial situation present them with enormous challenges. In what kind of city do we want to live in the future? And what does it take so that Berlin will remain a creative center in the coming years that attracts both local talents and international artists?

In 2030 I imagine a Berlin that not only preserves its cultural diversity, but actively promotes through the right framework. A Berlin in which sustainable funding, affordable work and living spaces and fair fees are of course. A Berlin that has recognized that pop culture is not just entertainment, but also a social force that creates identity, drives innovations and creates spaces for diversity. It is the reason why people from all over the world come to Berlin. In order for it to stay that way, pop culture – and overall culture – must be considered in a vision for Berlin 2030.

Pop culture is often expected to finance itself. That it does not need funding because it works commercially and the success happens automatically. This creates pop culture exactly when the general conditions are correct. If there are affordable rooms and a lively infrastructure of organizing, companies and networks and targeted grants. Without these foundations, the creative potential of the city remains unexpected and: it wanders somewhere else. Structures are needed that enable pop culture.

The youngsters in particular need support to professionalize itself. And he needs suitable venues, rehearsal rooms, small agencies and labels. This is the only way to reduce the growing gap to the global players and keep the pop music scene of our city its diversity and creativity – and thus a central part of its cultural identity.

What urgently needs

We now have to actively work to ensure that Berlin will continue to be a city that stands for a diverse pop culture. This only works when different things come together: freedom, promotion and professionalization.

With the musicboard, we are working to expand sustainable funding structures and make it visible that pop culture is a central part of the city society. We need places where artists can try out, also apart from the market logic: small clubs, live music venues and festivals such as CTM or Xjazz.

At the Pop Culture Festival, which organizes the musicboard in August, international and established artists meet new talents from Berlin. It offers a platform for brave line-ups, an inclusive and diverse program and creative experiments-freedom.

Pop funding must enable wide access. Diversity must not be a keyword, but must be in the center. This also includes targeted support in professionalization. With the Pop-Kultur Festival, we focus on the qualification and networking of young artists with the Pop culture training program.

Cooperation between politics, business and creative scene

In addition, we urgently need closer cooperation between politics, business and the creative scene. With our partners such as the Berlin Music Commission or the club commission, we are already building an infrastructure, exchange, cooperation and shared growth.

Berlin 2030? A city in which diverse pop culture lives, local and international perspectives are visible – and where the next generation of musicians can realize their visions. My advice for young artists today: form gangs! Connect networking, share knowledge and resources and use the existing platforms. Berlin offers an infinite number of opportunities – you have to conquer it and best together.
