‘Les Miserables’ arrives at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid on the 40th anniversary of its premiere in London

This Friday, November 28, the Apolo Theater in Madrid raises the curtain on ‘Les Miserables’, the acclaimed production that returns to the capital coinciding with the 40th anniversary of its original debut in London.

The production company ATG Entertainment and original producer Cameron Mackintosh bring to the capital the version that has triumphed in the West End and Broadway under the direction of Laurence Connor and James Powell.

The adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel of the same name explores themes such as justice and sacrifice with a cast made up of fifty experienced Spanish actors, singers and dancers. Jean Valjean – the ex-convict who seeks redemption – will be played by Adrián Salzedo, a long-time actor who takes on one of the most demanding roles in the genre.

Along with him, Inspector Javert will be played by Pitu Manubens, and the main cast is completed by Teresa Ferrer as the tragic Fantine, Quique Niza as the idealist Marius, Alèxia Pascual as Cosette, and Elsa Ruiz Monleón in the role of Éponine.

The play follows the story of Jean Valjean, an ex-convict who seeks redemption after being released from prison. Tirelessly pursued by Inspector Javert, Valjean rebuilds his life while caring for Cosette, Fantine’s daughter, a woman exploited by poverty.

In the context of post-revolutionary France, the fates of Valjean, Cosette and other characters become intertwined with the uprising of idealistic young people on the barricades.

Boublil and Schönberg’s score includes iconic songs such as ‘I Dreamed a Dream’, ‘On My Own’, ‘Bring Him Home’, ‘Do You Hear The People Sing? ‘, ‘One Day More’, among others.

‘Les Miserables’ is the longest-running musical in the world, having surpassed 15,000 performances in the West End alone. It has become the most successful work of all time, with performances in 438 cities in 57 countries, translated into 22 languages and applauded by more than 130 million viewers. Tickets for the Madrid performance are now on sale.
