Sergio Staino, his wife Bruna has died: she was 74 years old

Bruna Pinasco, wife of the satirical designer and cartoonist Sergio Staino, died today, Tuesday 25 November. ‘Bibi’, as her husband called her in his famous cartoons, passed away at the age of 74 due to an incurable disease. The announcement of the disappearance was made by the Municipality of Scandicci, a city on the outskirts of Florence where the couple lived together with their family.

Bruna’s death occurred just over two years after the death of Staino, who died at the age of 83 on 21 October 2023. ‘Bibi’ in the cartoons was the wife of Bobo, Staino’s alter ego, and represented the feminine point of view and complementary to that of her husband, who had great faith in the Italian left, without however sparing her severe self-criticism.

Scandicci’s condolences

“I want to express my pain and that of the entire community of Scandicci for the loss of a special woman – writes the mayor Claudia Sereni in a message – Bruna Pinasco, with her always discreet but fundamental presence, knew how to be at the center of relationships together with Sergio. She had an extraordinary ability to keep things and people together, from Sergio’s activity to that incredible network of friendships which in the history of this extraordinary couple was able to make the difference. ‘Bibi’ occupied a unique and essential place in the cartoons of Sergio, who never hid his great love for this exceptional woman, who also brought another culture – the Peruvian one – which enriched the way she knew how to live and keep the family together.”

“His passing – continues the first citizen – leaves us with profound pain and an even greater responsibility in preserving the memory of two inseparable figures. Just two years after Sergio’s death, today we also say goodbye to her. I will do everything to ensure that her figure can be valorised, because her story has never been told publicly, also to give dignity to the role of women in the cultural life of our country. We will also carry forward the commitments made together with the Region and other institutions to valorise the cultural and artistic legacy that this great couple of ‘Scandiccesi’ have left us”.

The funeral chapel will be set up in the premises of the Castello dell’Acciaiolo in Scandicci tomorrow, Wednesday 26 November, from 1pm to 8pm.
