The Dracula film, also shot in Kainuu, will not be released in theaters in Finland

The distribution company estimates that despite the connections to Finland, the name director and the classic story, the number of viewers could remain small in theaters, so Dracula is only coming to digital sales for viewing at home.

French director Luc Besson’s new Dracula film will not be released theatrically in Finland, although it was shown at the Night Visions festival in Helsinki.

Katarina Nyman, director of film distribution at the distribution company Nordisk Film, says that the film’s audience potential was judged too small in theaters in the Nordic countries.

The film will be available for digital rent or purchase in Finland on December 29.

Dracula was filmed for four days in Kainuu, but according to Nyman, the connection to Finland does not usually have a decisive effect on viewership.

French director Luc Bessonin release Dracula was recently seen twice at the Helsinki Kinopalatsi at the Night Vision festival, but there are no other theater performances planned.

Director of film distribution for the film distribution company Nordisk Film Katarina Nyman says no Dracula to see in theaters in other Nordic countries as well. In European, Latin American, Middle Eastern and North African countries Dracula has come to the premiere during the summer and fall, with a US premiere in February 2026.

Count Dracula (Caleb Landry Jones) is a centuries-old vampire.

Theatrical distribution in exchange for Dracula will be available for digital sale in Finland, i.e. for rent or purchase, on December 29.

“Of course, these are always commercial assessments of what the audience potential is in which market,” says Nyman.

“There are quite a lot of costs in bringing it to movie theaters, so you have to assess whether there is an audience for the film or not,” he continues.

“For the Nordic countries, the assessment was that the film’s audience potential in cinemas might be more limited, so it was decided to bring the film here only for home viewing distribution.”

In the present case it is the internationally recognized director Luc Besson and Dracula the story is well known. The film has even been filmed for four days in Kainuu, where suitable winter landscapes were found. According to Nyman’s experience, even the connection to Finland does not particularly affect the number of viewers.

“There have been quite a few films that were, for example, filmed in Finland or where a Finnish actor played a supporting role. It has not necessarily had a decisive impact on commercial success,” he says.

Ilta-Sanom critic Taneli Topelius gave Draculalle Based on the show Night Visions two stars out of five.

Gathering international reviews Rotten Tomatoes website gives a total of 11 based on mainly Spanish reviews Draculalle 82 percent grade, i.e. a very positive overall assessment. However, this rating does not yet include, for example, American critics, because the US premiere is only in February.
