An Iranian court sentences film director Jafar Panahi to one year in prison in absentia

An Iranian court has convicted film director Jafar Panahi in absentia this Monday on charges of “propaganda against the regime”, as confirmed by one of his lawyers, months after being awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Festival for ‘A Simple Accident’.

The lawyer, Mostafá Nili, has specified in a message on his account on the social network

Panahi, who already received the Golden Bear at the 2015 Berlinale for the film ‘Taxi Tehran’, left Iran during the month of May after being prohibited from doing so for 15 years and several months in prison. Thus, these restrictions were lifted after he completed his sentence, during which he went on a hunger strike in Evin prison.
