“Zootopia 2”: 1.7 million spectators in one week, the best start of the year ahead of “Lilo & Stich”!

The mark of five million entries at the end of operation is in sight! Solid gold first week for “Zootopia 2.” It was already off to a very strong start: on November 26, the animated film had already garnered 224,539 admissions in a single day, signing the second best start of the year in French theaters, just behind another Disney, the live-action version of “Lilo & Stitch”. This attracted 262,605 fans on the Wednesday of its release, May 21. But since then, the funny animals have far surpassed the little Tahitian woman and the friendly extraterrestrial monster: Tuesday evening, “Zootopia 2” had accumulated 1.74 million tickets sold in one week of operation.

The American feature film by Byron Howard and Jared Bush therefore becomes the new champion of box office starts in France in 2025. It does even better than the first opus. When it was released in February 2016: “Zootopia” garnered 1.56 million admissions in its first week (for a final score of 4.7 million). However, it is less than “Moana 2” which, a year ago, caused a tidal wave in theaters by bringing together 2.4 million spectators in seven days (8 million in total).

A hit also in China

Note that internationally, the unlikely duo of investigators, made up of the adorable rabbit and the scoundrel fox, are off to a thunderous start to their career. With $556 million in worldwide revenue last Sunday, “Zootopia 2” takes the title of best start of all time for an animated film. In the United States alone, where the film was released on Friday, November 28 for the Thanksgiving weekend, the most lucrative of the year for cinema locally, it earned $156 million in revenue.

In China, where American cinema has not been popular for more than a year, feature films are off to an almost record start. With 272 million dollars, it marks the second best of all time for a foreign film, after “Avengers: Endgame”. 2025 therefore concludes in the best way for Disney, especially since the studio still has a huge cartridge in reserve for the third part of James Cameron’s “Avatar” saga on December 17, entitled “Of Fire and Ashes”. This should also fill theaters around the world and give some color to depressed attendance in France.
