Photographer Martin Parr has died

British photographer size Martin Parr has died, informs the Martin Parr Foundation on their website. Parr was 73 years old when he died.

Parr was one of Britain’s most prominent photographers, who also belongs to the photographers of the world-famous Magnum Photos photo agency. He came to international attention with the photographic work published in 1986, The Last Resort: Photographs of New Brightonwinged. The images in the work were shot by Parr in British beach destinations during the years 1983–1985.

The Last Resort – series of pictures caused a lot of discussion in Britain when the pictures were exhibited in London’s Serpentine Gallery in 1986. At the time, they were seen as political comments and statements by the Prime Minister Margaret Thatcherin for actions focused on the economy of the conservative administration.

Parr graduated as a photographer from Manchester Polytechnic.

He taught in several different schools, also in Finland; Parr was a visiting professor at the School of Applied Arts in 1990–1992. Parr visited Finland for the first time in 1987, when he participated in a photography workshop organized by gallery Nykyajan in Tampere.

He also visited Finland in the early 2010s, when he drove from Helsinki to Oulu in six days. The end result was the photo exhibition Think of Finland, which was seen at the Laboratory gallery in Helsinki in the spring of 2012.

“It was a great trip,” Parr said in his 2021 presentation to HS in the interview.

In the summer of 2021, his exhibition Martin Parr: Life’s a Beach was seen as the summer exhibition of the VB photography center in Kuopio.
