“An insult to all victims”: left-wing elected officials and feminist associations condemn Brigitte Macron’s “dirty cunts”

Words that don’t get through. The day after the publication of a video in which Brigitte Macron calls the feminists who entered Ary Abittan’s show “dirty cunts”, left-wing elected officials and feminist associations strongly condemn these remarks.

In this video published Monday evening on social networks by the media Public, the First Lady appears alongside comedian Ary Abittan, a few minutes before the start of his show “Authentique”, at the Théâtre des Folies Bergères, in Paris, Saturday December 6. “Are you okay, how are you?” », asks the president’s wife to the actor who withdrew from public life in 2021 following a rape investigation which targeted him. “I’m afraid (…) of everything,” replies the actor. “If there are dirty idiots, we’re going to kick them out (…) especially masked bandits,” retorts Brigitte Macron.

The actor of “What have we done to the good Lord?” » had been indicted and subjected to judicial review in the context of this case. The courts finally dismissed the case in April 2024. A decision confirmed on appeal in January 2025.

“We were extremely shocked and scandalized by Brigitte Macron’s comments,” responded the Nous Tous collective on BFMTV, four members of which interrupted the show. Quickly, the association took up the insult of “dirty cunts” on its own, launching the #dirty cunts on social networks.

In just a few hours, the hashtag brought together several hundred posts on Instagram and X, including that of the actress Judith Godrèche, who has become one of the figures in the fight against sexual violence. “I’m a dirty cunt too. And I support everyone else,” she said in an Instagram story.

“Brigitte Macron must apologize”

Beyond the activists, the political class also reacted. “We started with women’s rights great cause of the five-year termit ends by insulting them. It’s time for the Macron couple to leave,” commented France Insoumise MEP Manon Aubry on X.

On RMC, the president of the environmental group Cyrielle Chatelain believes that the comments made by the First Lady are “an insult to all activists and all victims”. She sees it as a way of saying “we are going to silence them, while we are in a moment where we must tell women (…) speak up, we listen to you, we believe you”.

“Stop unnecessary controversies. Although the terms may not be the right ones, the First Lady points to a reality. These repeated happenings are boring and do nothing to help the cause they claim to defend,” defends Ensemble pour la République MP Prisca Thevenot. “There was a dismissal. Can we also respect this dismissal? Can this man return to his job as he had it before? », insists the former government spokesperson on the BFMTV set. For its part, the Nous Tous collective reminds us that “a dismissal of the case is not an acquittal”.

For Amélie de Montchalin, also a guest on RMC this Tuesday morning, “it is not a language that is intended to be in the public debate”. The Minister in charge of Public Accounts, however, says she understands that the interruption of a show “can cause annoyance”.

This Monday evening, the entourage of the Head of State justified Brigitte Macron’s remarks by evoking “a criticism of the radical method used” by the activists who interrupted the show.
