Artists invite us to reflect on new ways of seeing the future

The sample The future is a U-turn: Ideas and fictions about the future, It is an invitation to rethink the short-term destiny of humanity. War, migration, overpopulation, machismo, real estate speculation, depletion of water resources and cultural appropriation are just some of the points that are addressed, explained the curators José Manuel Springer and Emmanuel Albarrán.

The exhibition consists of 64 pieces by 34 artists and is exhibited in the Chancellery Museum, in the Matías Romero Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE). Distributed in four rooms, the exhibition was born as a call to delve into new ways of seeing the future.

Among the participating artists are Mariana Dussel, Omar Barquet, Calixto Ramírez, Amauta García, Mónica Espinoza, Marek Wolfryd, Fernando Moreno, Alejandra López Yasky and Álvaro Verduzco.

“Our intention was to try to address with the artists the concerns of the new generations. We were interested in how these new problems are now directed towards a technological future. The intention was to transcend the idea of ​​a salable, auctionable art, with no other objective than to have a financial value,” commented Emmanuel Albarrán in an interview.

Visionary insights

According to the curator, the exhibition is an effort to work on a vision related to temporal transition. “We wanted to give the reading that visionaries do of the symbols and technologies that transform the world.”

Other themes that stand out are those that question economic and social differences, such as the series of photographs Peter England, by Roberto de la Torre; the hectic landscapes of cities in several countries; is also The cycle of the seasons, by Ricardo Rendón.

“We wanted to put on the table ideas of utopias and disastrous futures that link visions about the body, gender and the future. We realized that, for many, tomorrow is a way of moving away from the present, but we cannot stop thinking that the vision of technological conglomerates is being incarnated in current societies,” explained the curator.

Some of the works are made with artificial intelligence, such as those of Édgar Silva, who made some drawings himself and then used the digital tool, with which he mixed animalistic aspects and the dizzying growth of cities through the peripheries, which leads to interpreting the landscape as monstrous, expanding without control.

The sign of the Holy Cross, The virgin of lust y Eve and nothing else, by Paola Carolina Sino, are evocations of fragments in which she seeks to deconstruct the stereotypes with which she replaces new archetypes of femininity. Through collages In the shape of a totem, the artist adds pieces that relate religious ideas with concepts such as the liberation of women, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

The exhibition The future is a U-turn: Ideas and reflections on the future It will be on display until January 15, 2026 at the Chancellery Museum, within the facilities of the Matías Romero Institute (Republic of El Salvador 47, Centro Histérico neighborhood, Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office).
