The PSOE wants the Government to urge the RAE to incorporate the term “anti-gypsyism” in the Dictionary

The PSOE has registered in the Congress of Deputies a non-legal proposal (PNL) by which it urges the Government to ask the Royal Spanish Academy to incorporate the term “anti-gypsyism” in the Dictionary of the Spanish Language (DLE).

This is what the socialists demand in the initiative, for debate in the Culture Commission, to which Europa Press has had access. They explain that it is a “specific and differentiated form of racism, prejudice or discrimination” directed towards Roma people that is separated from other concepts already included in the Dictionary.

“Despite its growing use and social recognition, the term antigypsyism does not currently appear in the Dictionary of the Spanish Language (OLE) of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), which represents a significant lack in the linguistic recognition of a social and discriminatory reality that affects thousands of people in our country,” explains the socialist group.

The PSOE asks that the RAE recognize “the widespread and legitimized use” of the term in the academic, institutional and legal spheres, both at the national and European level, and in turn asks that linguistic and institutional awareness be promoted around the recognition of the different forms of racial and ethnic discrimination.
