The Reina Sofía inaugurates its ‘Pieza Única’ space with an installation by Thomas Hirschhorn

The Reina Sofia Museum has inaugurated its space ‘Unique Piece’ dedicated to showing, temporarily, a work belonging to its collections outside the framework of the permanent exhibition stories. The first piece is the installation ‘Art Center 6 (Blow Down)’ de Thomas Hirschhorn.

Thus, the work of the Swiss – which dates back to 2001 – can be seen on Floor 1 of the central headquarters of the art gallery – in the connection between the Sabatini and Nouvel buildings.

The installation has recently been incorporated thanks to the donation of the Meana Larrucea Collection, which was founded by lawyer Fernando Meana together with his wife, María Victoria Larrucea, and houses more than five hundred works by prominent contemporary artists such as Juan Muñoz, Cristina Iglesias, Cildo Meireles, Cindy Sherman or Miquel Barceló, among others.

On the other hand, Hirschhorn is one of the fundamental artists in the so-called institutional criticism, an influential current that led in the eighties a questioning of the art system and the power structure, as well as the generation of economic value of contemporary art museums.

‘Art Center 6’ It is the sixth in a series of installations that represent a current art institution in the manner of a doll’s house.
