The Russian director Tugan Sokhiev will conduct the orchestra for the first time in the New Year’s Concert 2027as reported by the Vienna Philharmonic.
The president of the Philharmonic, Daniel Froschauer, has justified the choice by ensuring that Tugan has been “closely linked” to the Philharmonic musically and personally since 2009.
“During our first performances together, a great mutual trust and musical understanding quickly developed, which has since continually deepened and developed. We look forward to our future projects and the next New Year’s Concert“said Froschauer.
In 2009, The conductor collaborated on an Asian tour of the Vienna Philharmonic in Seoul, which was followed by appearances at subscription concerts in Vienna and other cities around the world.. In 2025, in addition to subscription concerts and a European tour, Sokhiev conducted the Midsummer Night’s Concert for the first time, as well as the Johann Strauss Anniversary Gala.
Tugan Sokhiev is also an opera director. From 2014 to 2022, he was musical director and chief conductor of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. He has performed in the world’s main opera houses, such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Vienna State Opera, where he directed, among other works, the premiere of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Iolanta’. Likewise, he has actively participated in the Vienna Philharmonic’s academies for young musicians and in 2016 founded his own conducting academy in Toulouse.
