A sketch attributed to Rubens that was considered lost will be exhibited at the 71st edition of BRAFA (Brussels)

The 71st edition of BRAFA (Brussels) will open its doors on January 25 to host more than 146 top-level galleries from 17 countries – with two Spanish galleries present – that will present masterpieces, such as ‘Portrait of an old man’, a sketch by Rubens that was thought to have been lost and which has reappeared for display for the first time to the public.

The work, according to BRAFA, was rediscovered by Klaas MullerBelgian dealer specialized in old masters and president of the institution. The quality of the execution and the expressive power of the portrait immediately caught Muller’s attention.

After a thorough comparative study of Rubens’ work, Muller identified a characteristic representative face frequently used by the Antwerp master to portray apostles, kings and secondary characters during his first years in Antwerp.

In this edition, Spain will be represented by Colnaghi and the Jordi Pascual gallery, who will provide their complementary vision of art ranging from the great old masters to the avant-garde and contemporary creation.

BRAFA will present more than 20 disciplines ranging from antiques to contemporary art, including old master painting, classical African art, antique and designer furniture, decorative arts, metalwork, carpets and textiles, rare books, jewelery and much more, promising an artistic experience as diverse as it is exceptional.

In addition, the King Baudouin Foundation, which promotes the preservation and dissemination of Belgian cultural heritage, celebrates its 50th anniversary as the guest of honor of the fair and will present an exhibition with masterpieces, in addition to enriching the cultural program with exclusive activities, concerts and specialized talks.
