The presenters criticized in the PMMP document accuse Yle of maliciously distorting the content

Yle Extra’s Christmas calendar – who hosted and wrote the script in 2007 Pinja Kotila and Sanna Väkäva suspect that Yle has infringed their copyrights in the article published in September 2025, Kati Laukkanen directing PMMP at the gig: Never again -dokumentti­elokuvassa.

“In my opinion, this is a clear copyright violation. The original program has been edited, edited and contextualized incorrectly. It has been contextualized in the documentary to reflect the point of view that was wanted to be brought out,” Kotila tells HS.

The case concerns the scene presented in the documentary, where the members of the band PMMP Paula Vesala and Mira Bullet watching interviews with them in which they are belittled or have sexist comments thrown at them.

In addition to these talk show clips, Vesala and Luoti watch the clip Yle Extra’s Christmas calendar – program, where Kotila and Väkevä present a humorous mock version of PMMP’s song Tan lines. The song has been changed in the program For pregnancy scars.

Homestead and according to Väkeva, the copyright and content problem of the documentary film is that the original program they hosted has been edited into the documentary so that it is “made to look malicious and disgusting”.

Kotila and Väkevä have asked Yle to either remove the scene from the documentary or add the essential parts of the episode to the film in their original form. Yle has not agreed to either request.

Now Kotila and Väkevä have requested a statement from the Copyright Council under the Ministry of Education and Culture (OKM). They have also complained about the documentary to the Public Word Council.

“Through the modified use of the program series, the content of the original episode is shown in a new light: stand-up-style media-critical humor becomes malicious content. – – The viewer gets the impression that the performers of the original program have maliciously commented on the pregnancy of the singing soloists”, states the request for a statement seen by HS.

According to Kotila and Väkeva, just showing a small clip changes the image of the program. In the original Christmas calendar episode, the idea was that Kotila and Väkevä read aloud an imaginary letter to Santa written by Vesala and Luodi. This point has been removed from the PMMP document, leaving only the paragraph heard after the letter.

However, the soundtrack “Terveisin PMMP: Paula ja Mira Mahat Paksuina” has been taken from the letter scene, and in the clip seen in the documentary, it has been moved to the theme music of the Christmas calendar without the word “Greetings”. According to Kotila and Väkeva, this gives the impression that the name of the program would have been “Paula ja Mira Mahat Paksuina”. The episode was called “Christmas surprise for PMMP”.

The episode cannot be seen in its entirety on Yle’s website. Yle published it in the story in Septemberwhich was released at the same time as the PMMP document. Its presentation rights have since expired.

The home says that he understands that with today’s eyes, the content of the episode can be interpreted completely opposite to what it was originally intended. The topic was chosen for the program because the pregnancy news of PMMP members was a big media phenomenon at the time.

“We had no reason to mock PMMP in our marginal program.”

When the documentary came out, Kotila and Väkevä jointly apologized to the director-writer of the program Pia Asikainen in an interview with Yle about what their humor looks like. Later Customer told HSthat they had not been told about the program ending in a documentary until they heard about it second hand. After this, they were offered the opportunity to comment on the topic in the article.

“At the time, we wanted the matter to pass and not cause a bigger stir,” says Kotila.

Now he and Väkevä feel that the topic has nevertheless caused significant personal harm to them.

In the statement request they sent to the Copyright Council, they want to get an answer as to whether their copyright has been violated in the document when it presents their program in an edited version.

“According to the applicants, the editing of a part of the program series and the publication of the edited version in Documentary Film is contrary to the moral exclusive rights provided for in Section 3 of the Copyright Act regarding the so-called right of respect,” the statement request states.

Kotila says that he and Väkevä do not primarily have any other, e.g. financial, requirements for Yle, but the most important requirement is the removal of the edited part from the documentary film.

Aho says that Yle does not comment on unfinished matters like this in public.

“If the matter is discussed at the copyright council, we will of course participate in the process as requested,” Aho writes.
