“The Rip” on Netflix: Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, two troubled cops who are friends in Miami

They grew up in Boston, have been friends since childhood, made their breakthrough together in “Will Hunting” and have since appeared regularly together in the same films. This time, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck play troubled, even shady cops, in the rather intense thriller “The Rip”, launched this Friday on Netflix, where we also find Teyana Taylor, freshly awarded the Golden Globe for best supporting actress for her performance in “One Battle After Another” by Paul Thomas Anderson.

“The Rip” begins with the mysterious assassination of Jackie, captain of a Miami task force specializing in drugs and money trafficking. His team, made up of five men and women, receives a tip about a stash of dollars in an outlying area of ​​the city. Among them, Dumars (Damon), who leads the group and cannot recover from the death of his son, and Byrne (Affleck), a loud-mouthed and nervous cop, who is also very close to Dumars.

When the five arrive at night in this isolated house, where a young Latino woman lives alone, all are haunted by the assassination of their beloved superior Jackie. When they come across 20 million dollars hidden in barrels – while the tip only announced 150,000 – the atmosphere deteriorates.

With a question that will quickly emerge: who are the crooks, who would like to skim the enormous sum for their own benefit, and would these be responsible for Jackie’s murder? The raiding of the house by strangers will contribute to strengthening dissensions…

High-flying actors

It’s not the film of the year, but, despite some inconsistencies and heavy-handedness in the action or interpretation, “The Rip”, full of tension, is the kind of thriller that leads the viewer to suspect each character in turn. Suspecting that we are leading him on the wrong path and that surprises will shake up everything at the end of the journey. And on this chapter, the “twists” at the end of the story will not disappoint.

All the actors contribute, through the high level of their acting, to creating a terribly heavy atmosphere throughout the plot. Starting with the Matt Damon – Ben Affleck duo. If the second sometimes tends to do a little too much in his tough guy composition who likes to show his biceps, the first accomplishes, as often, flawless in his incarnation of a brilliant team leader but forced to make hasty decisions. Furthermore, both perfectly instill doubt in the viewer’s mind about the fact that they could be Machiavellian scoundrels.

Also note the formidable performance of the young actress of Colombian origin Sasha Calle, former star of “The Young and the Restless”. She bursts onto the screen in the costume of the owner of the house where the money is stashed, and we don’t know if she is a member of a cartel, an innocent victim of the events, or a police informant.
