After the discovery of her daughters’ rare disease: the star and her fiance decided to separate

Nelson and Foster only got engaged in September 2025, after three years of dating, but have now decided to end the romantic relationship. Despite the separation, those close to the two make it clear that they will remain “united as parents” and will continue to raise their daughters, Ocean and Story, together.

According to an insider, Nelson (34) and Foster (26) remain in a friendly relationship and focus all their attention on the care and concern of their daughters. “They remain friends and are completely focused on their daughters,” the source said.

The first hint of the crisis came earlier this month, when Nelson appeared on This Morning without her engagement ring. During the interview, she spoke publicly for the first time about the medical condition of the twins, who were diagnosed with SMA type 1 – the most severe form of spinal muscular atrophy.

Following the diagnosis, Nelson began a public campaign to add a screening test for the disease already at birth, and even opened a petition demanding that the test be included in the routine blood test for newborns.

Last Thursday, Foster shared a personal post on Instagram, in which he read a poem he wrote himself. The song deals with acceptance and day-to-day dealing with his daughters’ condition, and it also includes his and Nelson’s joint reference to the moment of receiving the diagnosis.

“We were told that you probably wouldn’t walk, that you probably wouldn’t be able to talk, that you probably wouldn’t be able to hold your head up on your own, that’s what Jesse and I heard. SMA type 1,” he said. Later she wondered: “If I keep telling you who I want you to be and what I expect from it, do I love you, or do I love my fear?”. In the caption to the post, Foster praised Nelson for her public activity, and wrote: “Jessie, who points out a huge flaw in our health care system, is the definition of a superwoman.”
