Harsh criticism of actress Anna Loos

In the debate about the future management of the theater in Brandenburg Havel, there is harsh criticism of statements made by actress Anna Loos. “Because of Ms. Loos’ fame, the whole of Germany now thinks that Brandenburg an der Havel is a run-down city that has let its theater go to waste. She has seriously damaged the theater and the city through her statements,” criticized the chairwoman of the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra, Andrea-Carola Güntsch, in a statement.

Loos, who was born in Brandenburg an der Havel, applied for the directorship at the theater at the end of 2025. However, the position will not be filled initially.

The 55-year-old actress and musician had said: “The situation in the theater has continuously deteriorated. Too few tickets are sold, there is too little program on offer, the theater is increasingly losing its audience, and the lights are off more often than they are on.”

“Slap in the face” of the city

Güntsch, as a supporter of orchestra and theater work, said that this was “a slap in the face” for the theater and those responsible in the city. The theater’s occupancy is higher than the national average. “After a difficult post-reunification period, the Brandenburg Theater has increasingly consolidated itself and, with good capacity utilization, brings excellent quality to the stage, whether concerts by the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra, musical theater or plays in its own production,” said the club’s chairwoman.

Loos spoke of a “sinking ship”

A few days ago, the theater’s supervisory board decided that the theater’s senior dramaturge, Carola Söllner, would be appointed artistic director until 2027. It was said that a procedure for replacing the directorate was being developed. According to the support association, there were a total of 15 applications, even though the position had not yet been advertised.

A few days ago, Loos announced that she would continue her application for the directorship. “The theater resembles a sinking ship and a change of course is urgently needed.”

The chairman of the support association expresses sharp criticism

Güntsch questioned the actress’ qualifications for the position. Loos was “welcome to apply and compete with others” if there was a job offer, she wrote in her message. “What is required are competence in management responsibility, budget responsibility, personnel management, artistic planning, etc. Personally, I don’t see such qualifications based on your biography, and whether a city wants to work with someone who only has bad things to say remains to be seen.”

According to the theater to which the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra is assigned, the occupancy rate of the house in December 2025 was 91.1 percent. Around 6,200 guests came to a total of 54 events that month.
