Gregorio Marañón is re-elected as president of the Teatro Real for five more years

The Board of Trustees of the Teatro Real has re-elected this Friday, at the proposal of the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, Gregorio Marañón as president of the institution for a new five-year term.

On behalf of the Minister of Culture, his Secretary of State, Jordi Martí, indicated at the meeting that it should be Marañón who presided over this new stage and he proposed this to the members of the Board of Trustees, as Real explains in a statement.

Furthermore, both the mayor and the president of the Community of Madrid and the other trustees present and represented have supported the resolution, which has been approved unanimously.

After the vote, the president, who thanked the three administrations and the employers for their constant support, promised to put “his greatest enthusiasm and effort” in the “consolidation” of the achievements that have given the “national and international position” achieved by the Theater.

Marañón has stressed “the importance” for the project of its general director, Ignacio García-Belenguer; the artistic director, Joan Matabosch, and the deputy general director, Borja Ezcurra, as well as the “loyalty” of the public.

“The Teatro Real is the only European opera in which public contributions do not exceed 35% of its budget, to which civil society contributes 30% and the rest comes from the income generated by the Theater itself, mainly from the box office,” said Marañón.

For his part, Martí has ​​pointed out that “placing the Teatro Real in the first division”, as it is now, is “very difficult” but that Marañón has achieved it with a “solid cultural project”, presided over by “stability and consensus.”

Since his incorporation in 2008 to the Real board of trustees – in which six presidents had succeeded one another since its reopening in 1997 – Marañón has dedicated his work to the reform of the institutional model of the Teatro Real, which had to face the economic crisis that year with the reduction of public subsidies.
