Books, presented at Gnamc ‘Cy Twombly’ on the American painter’s connection with Rome

The volume “Cy Twombly” was presented at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome, published by Electa with the support of Maire, an engineering and technology group supporting the energy transition, a box set of three books that offer a cultural portrait of the Roman period of the American artist Edwin Parker “Cy” Twombly Jr. and his deep connection with the city. The first book collects the seminal and now unobtainable essays by Roland Barthes, introduced by an essay by Andrea Cortellessa. The second presents a rare writing by Fabio Mauri on Rome in the 1960s, together with other testimonies and period photographs. The third volume includes four essays signed by Renata Cristina Mazzantini, Nicola Del Roscio, Mariastella Margozzi and Stefano Marson, dedicated to the American artist’s relationship with Italy, the presence of his works in the Gallery’s collection and the recent donations from the Foundation.

The editorial project was born on the occasion of the three donations from the Cy Twombly Foundation to the museum, which led to the entry of twelve new works into the permanent collection, the opening of a room dedicated to the artist and the financing of the redevelopment of the restoration laboratory and an international postgraduate course on the conservation of contemporary works on paper, both named after Twombly. The presentation was attended by Renata Cristina Mazzantini, director of Gnamc; Carlo Nicolais, vice president of External Relations and Sustainability of Maire; Eleonora Di Erasmo, managing director of the Cy Twombly Foundation; Rosanna Cappelli, CEO of Electa; Fabrizio Di Amato, president and founder of Maire. with the moderation of the journalist Stefano Salis. The three volumes collect, among other things, essays by Roland Barthes, a rare text by Fabio Mauri on Rome in the 1960s and critical contributions dedicated to the relationship between Cy Twombly and Italy. The work is bilingual Italian-English.
