The PSOE wants the 2028 Goya to be held in Zaragoza coinciding with the bicentenary of the painter’s death

The Socialist Parliamentary Group has presented a Non-Law Proposition (PNL) in the Congress of Deputies urging the Government to “support and endorse” Zaragoza being the venue for the Goya Awards Gala in 2028, through dialogue with the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain and the rest of the institutions, for debate in the Culture Commission.

According to the text, to which Europa Press has had access, the PSOE urges to “support and endorse” Zaragoza hosting the Goya Awards Gala in 2028, within the framework of the commemorative events of the bicentenary of the painter’s death and in recognition of the figure of Francisco de Goya, the cinematographic tradition of Aragon and the talent of its professionals.

The proposal contemplates promoting dialogue and collaboration with the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain and the rest of the institutions to transfer this proposal and explore its viability.

The PNL highlights that, in recent years, the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences has promoted the decentralization of the Goya Awards Gala, holding it in cities such as Seville, Malaga and Valencia.

“Zaragoza, which has never hosted this event, is presented as an excellent option to continue this itinerancy, standing out for its accessibility, connectivity and cultural commitment. The celebration of the Goya in Zaragoza would also reinforce the role of medium-sized cities as engines of culture, making visible territories with great historical and artistic heritage beyond the large capitals,” states the PSOE.

Likewise, they praise Francisco de Goya as one of the “most universal artists in history” and “indisputable” cultural symbol of Aragon and Spain. “His work and legacy transcend generations, being a precursor of modernity and a source of inspiration for artistic creativity, including cinematography,” the document states.

“Within the horizon of the commemoration of the bicentennial of Goya’s death in 2028, Aragón is positioned as a cultural reference and an ideal space to host events of international relevance, such as the Goya Awards Gala, which bear the painter’s name as a tribute to his genius and artistic legacy,” they emphasize.

Finally, they remember that Zaragoza has been a territory of inspiration for the seventh art, serving as the setting for national and international productions, such as ‘Jamón, jamón’ (by Bigas Luna), ‘Palmeras en la Nieve’ (by Fernando González Molina) or ‘The Bride’ (by Paula Ortiz).
