The Élysée entrusts a new mission to Laurence des Cars, after his resignation from the Louvre

Leaving the Louvre after four and a half years in office at its head, Laurence des Cars was entrusted with a new mission on Wednesday by Emmanuel Macron. As confirmed by Maud Bregeon, government spokesperson at a press conference following the council of ministers, the former president of the Louvre will now work on the file of the “cooperation of major museums” as part of the French presidency of the G7. For the Élysée, it is a matter of relying on the“indisputable scientific expertise” of the curator while renewing the ” trust ” by Emmanuel Macron.

The presidency of the G7, an informal grouping bringing together Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom, is held each year by one of the seven states. It is up to him to define the orientations of the agenda and organize the preparatory meetings for the annual summit. This year it will take place from June 15 to 17 in Evian.

Laurence des Cars, in an interview with Figaro where she announced her resignation on Tuesday, had justified her choice by explaining: “the dynamic of modernizing the Louvre that I have been carrying out since taking office in September 2021 can no longer be accomplished. Staying would mean managing what already exists when the Louvre needs to continue its transformation.”

To succeed him, Maud Bregeon confirmed that the current president of the Palace of Versailles, Christophe Leribault, had been appointed to the presidency of the Louvre by the Council of Ministers.
