The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, as well as the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, have confirmed their presence at the Goya Awards gala, which will be held this Saturday, February 28, in Barcelona, according to what government sources have assured Europa Press.
For his part, the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, will not attend this edition either, which he last attended in 2023, and the Secretary of Culture, Sol Cruz Guzmán, will attend on behalf of his party, as ‘popular’ sources have informed Europa Press.
Kings Felipe VI and Letizia will not attend this year either because they have other occupations, as the president of the Film Academy, Fernando Méndez-Leite, confirmed to Europa Press. “They have declined the invitation, but we have a very good relationship with the Royal Family,” he assured.
Sánchez has attended the recent editions of the Goya Awards held in Granada (2025), Valladolid (2024), Seville (2023) and Valencia (2022). His absences, as president, were in 2019 due to scheduling problems and in 2021 when the Goyas were held in a hybrid manner due to the pandemic.
The Chief Executive attended the Goya Awards for the first time as President of the Government in 2020, at the gala held at the José María Martín Carpena Sports Palace in Málaga. His presence meant the return of presidential visits to the event.
The presence of authorities and politicians at the Spanish film awards gala has been common for years, since the Film Academy extends invitations to political groups with parliamentary representation. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero was the first President of the Government to attend the Gala, in 2005.
