Revisited planetarium, large-format immersion, experiences… In Paris, the Palais de la Découverte will reopen in early 2027

Key anniversaries and new developments in the pipeline. The City of Science and Industry (19th century) is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The Palais de la Découverte (8th century) will celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2027. Managed by the public establishment Universcience, these two science museums – which attract around three million visitors per year – are each preparing to write a new chapter. Starting with the Palais de la Découverte, closed since 2021, which should reopen its doors in early 2027, in the west wing of the Grand Palais. An inauguration which will mark the end of a titanic project costing nearly 500 million euros to renovate this vessel, larger than the Palace of Versailles (Yvelines), located between the Seine and the Champs-Élysées.

Enough to definitively turn the page on the turmoil between the scientific museum and its “roommate”? In recent months, uncertainties surrounding the future of the Palais de la Découverte have made the teams fear that the area will be eroded in favor of the Grand Palais, or even a forced move outside the walls. All against a backdrop of tensions with the Ministry of Culture. In June, the government ended up suddenly ousting Bruno Maquart, the president of Universcience. Sylvie Retailleau, former Minister of Higher Education, Research and Space, was appointed in December to replace him. The physicist will also have the delicate mission of leading the future renovation project for the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie. Interview.
