Timothée Chalamet gossips about the opera – the stages respond with humor

Hollywood star Timothée Chalamet (30) caused outrage with a remark about an alleged lack of interest in opera and ballet. Major opera houses are now reacting to the Oscar candidate’s statement with a mixture of humor and criticism.

Chalamet, who is nominated for Best Actor for his role as an ambitious table tennis player in the film “Marty Supreme”, discussed, among other things, the future of the cinema industry and the interest of viewers in films in a discussion that lasted almost 90 minutes with his colleague Matthew McConaughey (56). In that context, Chalamet said he doesn’t want to work in fields like ballet or opera – “things where you say, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive even though no one cares about it anymore’.”

The actor quickly added that he has the utmost respect for the “ballet and opera people out there” and joked that he has now lost favor with audiences.

Headwind from the opera world

And indeed there was pushback from the opera and ballet world. New York’s Metropolitan Opera posted a video on Tiktok of staff behind the scenes, musicians and audience members in the packed opera hall, with the caption – “This is for you, Timothée Chalamet.” The Los Angeles Opera House wrote to the actor on Instagram: “Sorry, we would give you free tickets to the Akhnaten Opera, but the performance is almost sold out. There are still a few seats available if you hurry up.”

Opera houses in Europe also countered with quick-witted humor. The Vienna State Opera linked Chalamet’s statement on Instagram and started a survey on the street – “Do people really care about opera and ballet?” The stage in Vienna would be waiting for him, the house wrote in a “personal invitation” for the actor.

The Bavarian State Opera and State Ballet posted a short clip with Chalamet’s quote, immediately followed by a video of the audience clapping in the packed hall after a performance. The Royal Opera in London also went on the creative offensive. The opera house accompanied the actor’s words with a fast-paced video of rehearsals and performances, noting that thousands would gather here every evening. “If you want to change your mind, our doors are open to you,” says the post addressed to Chalamet.
