This March 8, International Women’s Day, the theatrical arts are filled with uncomfortable stories, insistent memories and questions that do not always find answers.
Playwrights, directors and performers stage productions that examine violence, inequality and the battles that many face in daily life. Between fiction, humor and testimony, the panels bring together stories that for years remained out of focus.
In forums in Mexico City, these views take various forms: they revisit ancient myths, evoke ancestors, explore mental health or dwell on human fragility. The season concentrates premieres, new seasons and interdisciplinary projects that show the creativity of multiple voices and ways of inhabiting the stage.
One of the most unique productions takes place in the Creation Laboratory of the Scenic Garden, Eurydice (according to Eurydice), written by Alexander Wright and directed by Ana Graham.
The story recovers the Greek myth from the perspective of the demigoddess, far from the heroic journey of Orpheus. Eurydice remembers her adventurous childhood, her first love with Aristaeus, and questions the idea that her destiny consists of waiting for a rescue.
Live music, pop classics, tap dance, spoken word and humor create a language that combines tradition and modernity. Maria Kemp plays Eurydice; Aldo Guerra, Aristaeo and Orfeo, and Ana Graham and Belén Aguilar alternate in the role of Persephone.
The public participates in the musical fantasy during Time After Time, while references to coffee shops, superhero costumes and iconic songs bring the work closer to today’s world. The performances will be today at 12 and 2 p.m., and tomorrow at 4 and 6 p.m., with free admission through prior registration.
The reaction of the spectators confirms the impact of the work. “I loved that they brought it to the present. Very enjoyable in the musical part and the place contributes a lot to everything she says about the trees and the sky. Incredible,” commented one of the attendees. Her daughter added: “I appreciate that they gave it a feminist background. The story is dense, but so anyone can approach it without feeling overwhelmed.”
At the Hellenic Cultural Center, the month’s programming also dialogues with 8-M. learn to swim, Aaron Zamora’s one-man show, played by Ana Banderas, explores depression and human vulnerability with poetic intensity.

In the name of the Mancha, written by Felisa Vargas, known as Bobby Watson, looks at childhood and personal discovery. Puzzle, by Berta Hiriart, focuses attention on adolescent mental health and questions the myth of normality.
Other montages broaden the view towards precariousness and collective tragedy. The common, by José Emilio Hernández directed by Simón Franco, examines forms of coexistence in difficult contexts. Los Hardings, by Alexia Bürger and directed by Sandra Félix, invites us to reflect on individual responsibility in the face of collective events.
Poetry and faith
In parallel, Adam and Eve: Sabines on the surface, by Marco Antonio Silva, combines dance-theater and live music to pay tribute to the poet Jaime Sabines, with the participation of José María de Tavira, Joaquín Cosío, Fernanda Castillo, Emma Dib and Arón Bitrán.
The eclipse, by Caracola Producciones and Teatro UNAM, places the audience in front of literal and symbolic darkness, and raises questions about faith, grief and the search for meaning.
The children’s scene is also part of this cycle: In search of the Snark, of Teatro en Fuga, mixes lights, shadows and humor, and explores emotions and accompaniment in childhood.
For those looking for laughter and excitement, comedy The mind manipulator, by Próspero Teatro, presents its first full version in Spanish after its success in London and New York. The complete program is available on the websites helenico.gob.mx and mexicoescultura.com.
Off stage, the reflection continues with the virtual talk Female presence in Leonese theater: 25 years of stage memory, which will be broadcast tomorrow at 12 noon on the Facebook account of the National Literature Coordination.
Rocío Puente, Celia Garza, Bertha González and Paola Arenas will evoke experiences of women who kept the scene alive from invisibility, between memories, cultural analysis and stories full of affection and resistance.
