Santeri Kinnunen plays Vesa-Matti Loir at the Helsinki City Theatre

The musical play The Story of the Laughing Tramp will premiere at the Helsinki City Theater next fall.

Actor Santeri Kinnunen plays Vesa-Matti Loir in Helsinki City Theater’s new musical play.

The play The Story of the Laughing Tramp premieres at the end of September 2026 and focuses on Loir’s career in the 1970s and 1980s.

The play deals with Loir as a bridge builder between art and entertainment in the era of unified culture.

Finnish from one of the top names in entertainment Vesa-Matti from Loir (1945–2022) a play will be performed at the Helsinki City Theatre.

The story of the Laughing Tramp to write a musical drama called Sami Keski-Vähälä and direct SpongeBob Westerberg. The play will premiere on the big stage at the end of September 2026.

The city theater according to the release, the focus of the play is on the 1970s and 1980s, but there are also glimpses of the beginning and end of Loir’s life.

The play takes place especially in the era of unified culture, when art and entertainment were seen as opposites. Loiri is seen in the work as a bridge builder between them.

During his career, Vesa-Matti Loiri worked in films, television, theater and music. As a musician, he could sing jazz, he could be seen on the theater stage, for example Seven brothers As Tuomaks, on television he was sometimes Uncle Nasse, sometimes Tyyne, in movies he was known above all as Uuno.

In the story of the Laughing Tramp music made famous by Loir will be heard, among other things Eino Leinon and Uuno Kaila compositions based on poems which Eeva Kontu adjust to new ones. A live band and a 13-member group of singers made up of actors will be heard on stage.

In addition to Loir’s performers, the roles will be seen Maria Ylipää, Joel Hirvonen, Vuokko Hovatta, Jouko Klemettila, Lasse Lipponen, Ella Lymi, Vappu Nalbantoglu, Jari Pehkonen, Ursula Salo, Antti Timonen and Kaisa Torkkel.
