“Last chance project”: we fall (re) in love with Ryan Gosling

After “The Fall Guy” and “Barbie”, France finds Ryan Gosling on the big screen. In “Last Chance Project”, in theaters since March 18, the Canadian actor impresses. He plays Ryland Grace, a science teacher leading an ordinary life. When he wakes up aboard a spaceship, he remembers nothing, including why he was on board. His memory slowly returns to him and he ends up understanding what is at stake in his mission. The sun is dying. And he, alone, must find the solution to save the Earth. During this journey, he makes friends… With an alien he calls Rocky (James Ortiz).

Visually stunning and full of humor

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (“Spider-Man: New Generation”), this creation brings together an unlikely duo: Ryan Gosling (“La La Land”) and Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”). In 2020 and in the middle of Covid, Andy Weir (“Alone on Mars”) brings the manuscript of his book to “Ken” in Hollywood, offering him, not only to produce it in the cinema, but also to be the main role.

And six years later, it works. This science fiction film is visually stunning but also full of humor. The staging of “Last Chance Project” manages to fully immerse us in the daily life of the main character, lost in the immensity of space. The images of the galaxy are spectacular and give the feature film a contemplative dimension. An immersion reinforced by the soundtrack. Technically, everything is very controlled.

Ryan Gosling’s interpretation also contributes to this success: it is clearly his best film, and he says so himself. He portrays both a funny and endearing character. His relationship with Rocky, the little alien, quickly becomes the heart of the plot. Their friendship, sincere and touching, creates moments of great intensity that can move the viewer from laughter to tears. This ability to mix humor, emotion and spectacle makes the work accessible, capable of touching young and old alike.
