They stage the trial of Oscar Wilde from contemporary sensibility

“Nothing to declare, officer… except my genius,” warns Oscar Wilde from the scene of Lady Oscar Salomeone-woman show written and performed by Yuriria Fanjul.

The story focuses on the 48 hours of the trial for “gross indecency” held in London in 1895, when the Irish playwright took his passions to their ultimate consequences and was sentenced to prison and censorship.

Starting from that episode, the montage takes a look at creativity, the affirmation of identity and what it means to sustain it in the face of an order that punishes difference.

With the direction of Arturo Fuentes, the scene is articulated from the rhythm. “I work with accents, silences and intensities; that flow is what sustains the action,” he explained in an interview with The Day.

The word, he added, does not remain on the textual level: it expands towards the original music of Rogelio Sosa, movement and lighting.

The starting point was not to reconstruct the past, but to activate it. “We were interested in interpreting the events from contemporary sensibility,” said the director. Hence, the development moves in a dreamlike, existential and historical record, where what is documented coexists with an aesthetic dimension that defines the figure of Wilde.

This intersection was also sustained in the dialogue with Fanjul. “His writing contains multiple layers and the work was to amplify them from the scene.” In this process, he specified, tensions arose at the limits: what to show, what to suggest and how far to take each element.

The figure of the Irish author appears in confrontation with the moral order of his time. According to Fuentes, the work reminds us that human rights issues, particularly for certain minorities, remain unresolved.

“Wilde was a figure who challenged that order, assuming devastating consequences. More than a direct speech, the intention was to build an experience that dialogues with the present.”

intimate dimension

In this framework, Lady Speranza Wilde, the writer’s mother, and the reference to Salomé appear, broadening the horizon towards a more intimate dimension. For the author and performer, these presences allow us to reclaim the femininity that Wilde explored, while at the same time different facets of the author coexist on stage.

The set and costumes were designed by Fuentes himself, with lighting by Érika Gómez.

“There is in Wilde a celebration of creativity and individuality; the need to affirm what one is, even in the face of adversity,” the director concluded.

Produced by Stage of the Arts México, Lady Oscar Salome It has performances at the Luisa Josefina Hernández Orientación Theater of the Centro Cultural del Bosque (Reforma and Campo Marte). The schedules are Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m. (except today and tomorrow), Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. The ticket costs 150 pesos. The season will conclude on April 19.
