The PP is against moving ‘Guernica’ to Bilbao, as the technicians advise against

This Monday, the PP has shown itself against the temporary transfer of Pablo Picasso’s ‘Guernica’ from Madrid to the Basque Country, as has been “strongly” advised against by the technicians, who assure that it should not travel but rather “should be where it is”, in the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid.

At a press conference from ‘Génova’, the Deputy Secretary General of Economy of the PP, Juan Bravo, responded in this way when asked if the party shares the words of the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who has called this request “categorized” and has pointed out that it is “an absurd controversy that promotes nationalism” to continue creating “that business of grievance.”

Last week, the Basque Government conveyed to the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, the request for the temporary transfer of ‘Guernica’ to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao between October 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the constitution of the first Basque Government and the bombing of Guernica. However, a report from the Reina Sofía Museum that “strongly” advises against this transfer.

This being the case, Bravo defends that although politicians should try to encourage “good things to happen”, the truth is that they should “always” do so “respecting the technicians.” “And if the technicians say that (the ‘Guernica’) should not travel and should be where it is, we politicians have little more to say,” he concluded.
