Pedro Sánchez celebrates the presence of Almodóvar, Sorogoyen and Los Javis in Cannes: “Our cinema makes history”

The President of the Government, Pedro Sanchezhas celebrated the selection of films directed by Pedro Almodóvar, Rodrigo Sorogoyen and Los Javis in the Official Section of the Cannes Film Festival. “Our cinema makes history“, wrote the Chief Executive in a post on the social network X.

‘Bitter Christmas’by Pedro Almodóvar, ‘The loved one’by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and ‘The black ball’by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, Los Javis, will compete for the Palme d’Or in the 79th Edition of the French competition. It is the first time that three Spanish feature films are up for the Palme d’Or in the same edition, a distinction that was awarded for the first time in 1955. A year earlier, in 1954, four national films were selected at the festival.

Last year, two Spanish films were up for the award, ‘Sirat’, by Oliver Laxe, and ‘Romería’, by Carla Simón, but the Palme d’Or went to ‘A Simple Accident’, by Iranian director Jafar Panahi. The only Spanish film that has won the Palme d’Or so far is ‘Viridiana’, by Luis Buñuel.
