Composer and a musician Anssi Tikanmäki has died, according to an update published on his official Facebook page. The information is confirmed to HS from the Tikanmäki family circle.

In an article published on Facebook, it is said that Tikanmäki died of a serious illness in Tampere on Tuesday, June 4. He was 69 years old.

Tikanmäki had a remarkable career in music. He graduated from the Sibelius Academy as a music teacher in 1980, but his career as a musician took him with him.

He has composed and released numerous albums, the most famous of which is his debut album Landscape pictures from Finland (1981).

Known to the general public, Tikanmäki emerged from Juice Leskinen’s band Grand Slam, which he joined after graduation. Juice Leskinen said that he considered it his best band in terms of playing skills. Tikanmäki worked in the band as a keyboard player, background and solo singer, arranger and producer.

Tikanmäki is also known for his film compositions. In the 1980s and 1990s, he made music for old silent films, such as Sergei Eisensteinin Battleship to Potemkin (1925) and FW Murnaun The last man (1924).

He composed music for several Kaurismäki brothers’ films. The most famous of these include Mika Kaurismäki Worthless (1982) and The Clan – the story of the family of Frogs (1984) as well as Aki Kaurismäki silent film Juha (1999).

Worthless was the fulfillment of my dreams. I got to make music for a long film, even though I didn’t have any screens other than my own record and some arrangements,” Tikanmäki recalled in an interview with HS’s Nyt supplement in 2010.

In the year In 2002, he founded the Anssi Tikanmäki Orchestra (ATO), which plays instrumental music composed by him.

The Anssi Tikanmäki Film Orchestra (ATFO), founded already in the 1980s, is specialized in accompanying silent films.

Both bands continue to operate according to Tikanmäki’s wishes and his sons Eljas Tikanmäki and Eemil Tikanmäki under.

Tikanmäki was awarded the Pro Finlandia medal in 2019.
