François Janin, one of the first voices of Formula 1 in the 1960s, has died

He was considered one of the “inventors” of sports broadcasting on television. Tuesday evening, François Janin died. He was 88 years old. This sports journalist, who notably worked for Le Monde and Europe 1, also worked for Stade 2 and headed the TF1 sports department in the early 1980s.

Formula 1 commentator on TF1, François Janin began his career at ORTF in the early 1960s alongside Raymond Marcillac, Robert Chapatte and Roger Couderc. In 1967, he was the one who announced the death of Italian driver Lorenzo Bandini during the Monaco Grand Prix.

Swimming and Formula 1

Passionate about swimming in particular, François Janin wrote about the discipline in Le Monde and became one of the only French journalists to cover the sport at that time. After covering the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976, he commented on swimming and Formula 1, his two favorite disciplines, for Stade 2. The journalist loved the single-seater, which was gaining popularity at that time, so much that he had Formula 1 parts at home.

It was at this time that François Janin left TF1, not always on very good terms with his management, for an active early retirement, working occasionally for Radio Canada. It was in Paris, where he lived until the end of his life, that he died on Tuesday evening.
