Acropolis Museum exhibits objects from ancient life

Athens. Greece’s Acropolis Museum is displaying more than 1,100 artifacts, from statues and board games to children’s toys, found in an ancient neighborhood of Athens during excavations at the archaeological site.

The objects, unearthed at the foot of the hill where the Parthenon temple is located, have been restored and are part of a site that Greece calls the museum under the museumwhich visitors will be able to access from July 26.

Everyday items, from storage vessels and cooking pots to tools and knitting needles, bear witness to the daily life of residents for more than 4,500 years, the Culture Ministry said.

The remains of the neighbourhood on which the Acropolis Museum was built reconstruct a complex of streets, dwellings with large rooms and courtyards, baths and workshops, and have been accessible to visitors since 2019.

Located on the southern edge of the archaeological site, the exhibition blends harmoniously into the visitor’s journey, contributing to the understanding of everyday life.said Culture Minister Lina Mendoni.

More than 1.5 million people visit the Acropolis Museum each year, which aims to visually connect with the Parthenon and other temples on the Acropolis Hill.

About half of the 160-metre frieze from the Parthenon temple is in the British Museum, while 50 metres of the carvings are in the museum in Athens.

Greece has repeatedly urged the British Museum to permanently return the 2,500-year-old sculptures that British diplomat Lord Elgin removed from the temple in 1806, during a period when Greece was under Ottoman Turkish rule.

This museum constitutes the optimal physical and conceptual framework to highlight, interpret and understand its masterpieces.he claimed.
