Jacques Audiard, director of “Emilia Perez”: “On the set, there was a kind of fever”

He doesn’t speak Spanish, isn’t a musician, doesn’t sing, and “jigs” when it comes to dancing. So for his tenth film, Jacques Audiard, 72, has made a musical in Spanish with international superstars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña. He has also imagined an incredible story: that of a Mexican cartel leader who becomes a woman and returns to his country to atone for his sins.

The result, “Emilia Perez”, is a breathtaking, masterful feature film, which surprises in every sequence, amazes and upsets. The filmmaker tells us about the genesis of this film, in theaters this Wednesday, which won the Jury Prize and the Best Actress Award (for its four main actresses) at Cannes (Alpes-Maritimes).
