Benefits of eating sour dishes

Sour foods like citrus fruits and fermented foods can improve digestion, control weight and support oral health.

Sour foods are acidic because they contain organic acids such as citric, acetic or lactic acid. They include many types such as fruits (tamarind, sour cherries, lemons, oranges, kumquats, grapefruit), fermented milk products (yogurt, sour cream), fermented vegetables (pickles, kimchi), vinegar, etc. These dishes not only enhance the flavor of the dish but also provide some health benefits.

Improve digestion

Probiotics produced when foods like yogurt are fermented can reduce digestive problems. They stimulate saliva and fluids to aid digestion, nutrient absorption, and reduce bloating and indigestion.

Vitamin C supplement

Many sour foods, such as citrus fruits, are high in vitamin C, which supports the immune system and enhances skin health. According to the US Department of Agriculture, 100 g of lemon and orange provide 53 mg and 53.2 mg of vitamin C, respectively. This vitamin also helps enhance iron absorption. Vegetarians and vegans supplement vegetables and fruits containing vitamin C to help prevent iron deficiency.

Reduce anxiety symptoms

Eating sour foods can be beneficial for people with panic and anxiety. Panic occurs when the amygdala activates the flight or fight response. Sour flavors stimulate the brain to quickly switch attention to strong taste buds. This weakens the amygdala (the sensory part of the brain), giving better access to the frontal cortex (the thought-making part of the brain). As a result, the frontal cortex sends a message to the sensory part that the body is not in real danger.

Weight control

The sour taste can help curb appetite and promote satiety, which is beneficial for weight control. They also contain beneficial gut bacteria. These bacteria regulate the digestive system and body immunity. A smooth digestive system and strong resistance help maintain a healthy body weight.

Reduce inflammation

Fermented foods also help reduce inflammation. Prolonged inflammation prompts cells to activate fat. This causes the body to store more fat, instead of burning it. Inflammation not only hinders weight loss goals but also increases the risk of metabolic disorders such as blood fats, diabetes…

Improve oral health

The acidity of sour foods contributes to reducing harmful bacteria in the mouth, thereby preventing the risk of periodontal problems. However, too much acid can affect tooth enamel, so they should only be used in moderation. For example, eat a piece of fruit for dessert or a small portion of fermented food at one time.

Control blood sugar levels

Sour foods can help regulate blood sugar levels, which is beneficial for people who are controlling blood sugar. Anthocyanin is an antioxidant found in tart cherries that also helps prevent type 2 diabetes.

Provide water for the body

Many sour foods, such as citrus fruits, have high water content. They prevent dehydration and maintain overall fluid balance in the body.

People should remember to combine sour foods with other food groups to balance nutrition. Pay attention to how your body reacts. If you feel discomfort such as acid reflux or digestive or kidney problems, consider reducing your intake.
