Most women need at least 7 hours of sleep each night to rest their bodies. However, some hormone-related problems can prevent good sleep.

Menstrual cycle: Women often have sleep problems before their period. This is when progesterone levels drop and symptoms of premenstrual syndrome appear. Women should exercise in the days before their period to sleep better. Prioritize relaxation and do not use electronic devices about 1-2 hours before going to bed.

Pregnant: Hormones are constantly changing during the first trimester of pregnancy. Pregnant women may be more sleepy at this time. By the third trimester, estrogen and progesterone levels decrease, easily leading to insomnia at night. Women urinate more often, feel restless, feel uncomfortable, and have difficulty falling asleep. Hormones cannot be controlled during pregnancy. Pregnant women should try using a pregnancy pillow to support their belly, and try sleeping with their head elevated.

Menopause: Many women go through menopause at age 50. Perimenopause and menopause are both associated with major changes in estrogen and progesterone, causing night sweats, hot flashes, and difficulty sleeping. Your doctor may recommend hormone replacement therapy to help relieve premenopausal symptoms. Women should eat foods such as soybeans and yogurt, avoid spicy dishes, and combine exercise and mental relaxation to repel hot flashes.

Have a medical condition

Women are more likely to have certain health conditions that make it difficult to sleep well each night.

Polycystic ovary syndrome causes irregular menstrual cycles, leading to high testosterone levels and lower progesterone levels. Hormone imbalance negatively affects sleep. Patients are also at high risk of sleep apnea. This is a sleep disorder that causes breathing to stop during sleep for a short period of time, making the body tired during the day.

Fibromyositis (muscle fibrosis) causes women to have muscle pain and difficulty falling asleep.

Urinary incontinence: Loss of bladder control leads to urinary incontinence, which is caused by many changes in the reproductive system during menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth and menopause. The urge to go to the bathroom can wake a person many times during the night.

If insomnia persists, women should see a doctor to find the cause and provide appropriate treatment. Treatments may include lifestyle changes, medications, cognitive behavioral therapy…
